Mongabay.com, run by Rhett Butler, originally focused on providing information about tropical rainforests, a topic Rhett is personally familiar with through his travels to a Borneo rainforest that has since been destroyed. In recent years, however, the site has expanded to include environmental news on numerous topics ranging from climate change to green business. He's also added a kids' version of the site aimed to spark interest in youngsters to learn about and appreciate rainforests. Rhett hopes through his work with Mongabay that more people will become aware of the beauty and importance of the environment so they'll be motivated to preserve our remaining biodiversity for the future.

On Mongabay.com, Rhett describes the concept of TREES, which are five basic steps we can take to saving rainforests:

Teach others about the importance of the environment and how they can help save rainforests.
Restore damaged ecosystems by planting trees on land where forests have been cut down.
Encourage people to live in a way that doesn't hurt the environment.
Establish parks to protect rainforests and wildlife.
Support companies that operate in ways that minimize damage to the environment.

The revenue Rhett's sites generate through AdSense has allowed him to quit his 9-5 job and focus on growing his environmental effort: traveling around the world to gain a connection to the efforts he is passionate about, garnering hands-on experiences, and looking for conservation opportunities. This travel also enables him to take these experiences and add valuable content to his website and further educate his readers.

A Touching Story Of The Day

Mother & Son -

My mom only had one eye. I hated her... she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell... anything for the money we needed she was such an embarrassment. There was this one day during elementary school. I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school..."Your mom only has one eye?!" and they taunted me.

I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, "Mom, why don't you have the other eye?! You're only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don't you just die?" My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that I had said what I'd wanted to say all this time.

Maybe it was because my mom hadn't punished me, but I didn't think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.

That night...I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.

Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I'm living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom.

This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me "What?! Who's this?!"... It was my mother...Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom's eye.

And I asked her, "Who are you? I don't know you!!!" as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her "How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out here now!" And to this, my mother quietly answered, "oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared. Thank good ness... she doesn't recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn't going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.

Then a wave of relief came upon me... one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house...just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand.... it was a letter to me.

She wrote...

My Son,
I think my life has been long enough now. And... I won't visit Seoul anymore... but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school.... For you... I'm sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you.

You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye... so I gave you mine... I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, 'it's because he loves me.' I miss the times when you were still young around me.

The candidates applying for scholarships in these three professional Streams must therefore quote North/East/West/South zones only (as applicable) in their case.

ELIGIBILITY: Students pursuing full time courses in these streams & studying in Schools/Colleges/Institutions /Universities recognised by MCI/AICTE/State
Education Boards/State Govt./ICSC/CBSE/Central Govt./Association of Indian universities, shall be eligible to apply. The student should have bonafide
admission in the 1st year of School/College/Institute/University in the academic year 2006-2007. Students of two year full time post graduate courses in
Business Administration/Management recognised by Central/State Govt./Association of Indian universities and which are equivalent to MBA, are eligible for management stream scholarship. Students having confirmed admission in the first year of full time engineering degree course. MBBS, MBA and also 11th standard as well as those in the 1st year of 2 year ITI course are eligible to apply. In case of graduates, the average percentage of marks of all the
academic years shall be treated as eligibility marks. Minimum eligibility percentage of marks for various categories will be as indicated above. Gross
Joint income of the family of the candidate from all sources (during financial year 2005-2006) should not exceed Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees One Lakh only).
The marks obtained in the qualifying examination making the students eligible to seek admission in the respective first year of these courses will be considered for selection. Normalisation of marks of applicant shall be done for Engg. MBBS & MBA streams to bring parity of marking system within defferent Boards/ Universities/Institutions. Criterion for selection will be merit and family's income. Wards of the employees of IOCL, its Joint Venture and Subsidiary companies and ABC Assessment Services are not eligible to apply.

AGE LIMIT: Minimum 15 years and maximum 30 years as on 1.9.2006 . Persons born between 1.9.76 and 1.9.91 (both days inclusive) are eligible to apply.

RESERVATION & RELAXATION : Relaxation in the upper age limit is 3 years for OBC candidates, 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 10 years for physically
challenged/physically handicapped candidates. 50% of the scholarships are reserved for SC/ST & OBC candidates. In each stream/category, 25% of
scholarships are reserved for girl students and 10% for physically challenged/physically handicapped students. Only those listed in the central govt's
OBC list will be considered against OBC quota. OBC candidates of state list and not covered by central govt's OBC list may apply against general quota.

APPLICATION: Candidates studying in 11th standard, 1st year of a 2 year ITI course, 1st year of Engineering degree, MBBS and MBA in the academic year 2006-2007 are to apply on the prescribed format given at IOCL's website www.iocl.com. Forms can also be filled and submitted online by logging on to http://www.epostbag.com/. Such candidates need not send forms by post. Once awarded the scholarships will be disbursed @ Rs. 2,000/- per month for 4 years in case of Engineering & MBBS and 2 years for MBA courses and @ Rs 1,000 per month for a duration of 2 years in case of 10+ and ITI course. Duration of each course in no case be less than the duration of the scholarship. The scholarship will be suspended, if the scholar is not promoted to the next academic year. In case, the scholar is not promoted for the second time (in succession for 2 years during the entire course), the scholar will be taken off from the list of IOCL scholars and scholarship will be discontinued permanently. The performance of the scholar must be satisfactory during the entire duration of the course. the performance is to be certified by the Head /Principal/Dean/Director of the school/College/Institute /University. The top one scholar each from final year of Engineering, Medicine & Management (who top their respective university exam) and top 10 scholars amongst final year of ITI & 12th (who are able to achieve position amongst top ten in their respective Board) will be awarded bonus prize of Rs 10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand only) each and invited to the annual day function of Indianoil Institute of Petroleum Management, Gurgaon, to receive the prize. The travel, board & lodge expenses will be borne by IIPM/IOCL. A scholarship holder under this scheme will not hold any other scholarship/stipend from any other source. If awarded any other scholarship/ stipend, the student can exercise his/her option for choosing the scholarship that he/she proposes to avail and inform awarding authority about the same. In case, the scholar opts for any other scholarship, he/she will have to refund the scholarship amount for the duration during which he/she is in receipt of the IOCL scholarship. There will be no obligation on part of IOCL to provide employment/vocational/summer training to any of the scholars, at any time/stage. IOCL reserves the right to reject any application as well as discontinue the scholarship at any time without giving any notice/assigning any reason.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Applications received later than 30th September 2006, will not be accepted. No correspondence on this subject will be
entertained. Only prescribed format of A4 size (without any enclosure or certificate) should be used and forwarded. IOCL shall not be responsible for any postal delay/loss in transit. No request in this regard will be entertained. Incomplete application form will be rejected. Court of jurisdiction for any dispute will be at Delhi. The shortlisted candidates will be requested separately, by post, to forward their Caste/Date of Birth/Mark Sheet/family's Income Certificate etc., duly authenticated by appropriate competent authority/civil authority for verification of documents and drawing up final merit list. Lt. Saurabh Kalia of 4 JAT Regiment of the Indian Army laid down his
life at the young age of 22 for the nation while guarding the
frontiers at Kargil.
His parents, indeed the Indian Army and nation itself,
lost a dedicated, honest and brave son.
He was the first officer to detect and inform about
Pakistani intrusion. Pakistan captured him and his patrol party of 5
brave men alive on May 15, 1999 from the Indian side of LOC.
They were kept in captivity for three weeks and
subjected to unprecedented brutal torture, evident from their bodies handed over
by Pakistan Army on June 9, 1999.
The Pakistanis indulged in dastardly acts of inflicting burns on these Indian officers with cigarettes, piercing their ears with hot rods, removing their eyes before puncturing them and breaking most of the bones and teeth.
They even chopped off various limbs and private organs of the Indian soldiers besides inflicting unimaginable physical and mental torture.

After 22 days of torture, the brave soldiers were ultimately shot dead. A detailed post-mortem report is with the Indian Army. Pakistan dared to humiliate India this way flouting all international norms.
They proved the extent to which they can degrade humanity. However, the Indian soldiers did not break while undergoing all this unimaginable barbarism, which speaks volumes of their patriotism, grit, determination, tenacity and valour - something all of India should be proud of.
Sacrificing oneself for the nation is an honour every soldier would be proud of, but no parent, army or nation can accept what happened to these brave sons of India. I am afraid every parent may think twice to send their child in the armed forces if we all fall short of our duty in safeguarding the PRISONERS OF WAR AND LET THEM MEET THE FATE OF LT.SAURABH KALIA.
It may also send a demoralising signal to the army personnel fighting for the Nation that our POWs in Pak cannot be taken care of. It is a matter of shame and disgust that most of Indian Human Rights Organisations by and large, showed apathy in this matter.

Through this humble submission, may I appeal to all the civilized people irrespective of colour, caste, region, religion and political lineage to stir their conscience and rise to take this as a NATIONAL ISSUE !!!
International Human Rights Organizations must be approached to expose and pressure Pakistan to identify, book and punish all those who perpetrated this heinous crime to our men in uniform.
If Pakistan is allowed to go unpunished in this case, we can only imagine the consequences.

As you read this, don't feel sorry for me, because it is the destiny of everyman to die someday.I am Kamil Hassan. a naturalised briton by birth and a business merchant based in the United Kingdom.I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer.
It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.I regret that I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone(not even myself), but my trade.Though I am very well to do, I was never open handed; I was always hostile to people and regarded them like they never had hopes of becoming as successful as myself.Now I know that there is a lot more to life than just prosperity.
I believe that when I am given a second chance to come to this world,I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that death is eminent, I have willed and given most of my belonging to immediate and extended family members, as well as a few close friends.I want Allah to be merciful to me and accept my soul. Hence I have decided to support charity work; this is what i want to be remembered for.So far, I have been able to reach out to a few charity organizations in the Singapore,Algeria and Malaysia.Now that my health has deteriorated so badly,I cannot do this myself anymore.
I once asked members of my family to aid me in giving of alms to those organizations catering for the less privileged in Bulgaria and Pakistan;they refused and kept the resources to themselves.Hence,I do not trust them anymore,as they seem not to be contempt with what I have left for them.
The last of my belonging which no one knows of,is the huge deposit of Four and half milion US dollars that I have in a safe keeping company abroad,which I will want you to secure and bestow to charity organizations.Please reply to my secured email address

Yesterday I noticed a RSS news feed in Gmail on wire text of a recent interview of Google CEO's i missed to read that yesterday and when was looking for that today came across a nice blog of Jeremy Wagstaff

Below is the post on his blog that lead me there....

"Interview With The Guy Behind The Klips

In today's Asian Wall Street Journal and in WSJ.com (subscription only, I'm afraid) I talk about widgets — sometimes called dashboards — as an alternative, or addition, to RSS.

Here is the transcript of an email/IM interview I did with Allan Wille, president and CEO of Serence, the company behind Klips:

The new Folio looks good. what's the main new feature in this version?

Based on customer feedback, mostly from Content Providers, images and a richer content experience were very key. Much of that had to do with increased branding capabilities as well. So images are likely the BIG feature in KlipFolio 3.0. Enterprise to a lesser extent were also asking for images - charts, graphs that can tie into CRM or other enterprise applications

why would someone go for Klips over an RSS reader or similar device?

We are positioning KlipFolio as a dashboard - a personal dashboard for consumers or an digital/business dashboard for enterprise. We are not an RSS reader, and I see our paths moving appart, such that the two products --KlipFolio and an RSS reader-- can exist in parallel. Klips are intelligent agents, where the value lies in their ability to inform and alert users of complex data. Klips are very good at allowing personalization of content, and persenting users with alerts to critical data. Of-course Klips can do news feeds, but the differentiation there is less apparent, and in some cases, an RSS reader will do a better job.

You seem to have a lot of European users. is that right, and if so, any reason for that?

KlipFolio started to have sucess with a number of key German news outlets - Tagesschau, Heise, Spiegel Online etc ... this started back in 2002, when RSS was not quite as hyped as it is today. I believe this gave us significant visibility among other content providers in Germany and Europe, and has led to a very large European userbase, and subsequently a good source of leads and customers. North America was hesitant to try new technologies and as RSS was adopted by more and more content providers in NA, Klips were caught in a difficult differentiation battle. With the features present in 3.0, wer are looking to overcome these challenges in NA.

You've been doing Klip for a while, and while as you know I'm a fan, it doesn't seem to have caught on as I might have expected. I don't see that many Klip buttons on websites. any thoughts on that?

When you compare the visibilty of Klips to RSS, you are quite right - it seems to be taking a back seat. It is important for us to continue to get the Klip buttons out there, as this is a major marketing program for us. Again, it is a question of differentiation, of added value over RSS. 3.0 will be addressing much of this, and we need to aggressively make sure we educate key content providers of the value - a trend we are seeing though is that the major content providers are contacting us not for simple Klip publishing, but more so for the development of branded desktop clients ...

Related to the last one, where do you see the market for this? it seems to be different fields you're playing to, from the RSS on a stick audience, to the secure corporate feeds...

Interesting question - our markets are (a) Content Providers (ie: CNET, Kluwer, Penton, Spiegel) for branded versions of KlipFolio (branded KlipFolio, downloadable from their sites, with their Klips bundled), (b) Enterprise (Wells Fargo, Advanded Telcom, Curtiss-Wright, NDR) who license KlipFolio Enterprise as an internal dashboard, and, (c) Application Vendors (Connotate, BizActions) who wish to OEM distribute KlipFolio as their own product, sublicensed to their customers (in other words a channel play). End users are not a market for us - they are a source of leads.

Critics might say that because its proprietary software, Klips are a step backwards, locking users and providers into something that's Old Economy.. any thoughts on that?

It's not proprietary. Anyone can build and publish Klips. We publish our APIs, and a full SDK free of charge, and with no need to register. We use XML and Javascript. Konfabulator, Apple dashboard, and Macromedia Central (or Adobe now ...) are more like Flash (as a mini-application environment). I must say it's very cool, and I have tried it a number of times, but the inconistency of the interfaces have ultimately gotten in the way. I do think it will attract a number of Content Providers due to it's brandability.

Where do you see this space (Klips, but also RSS, Konfabulator etc) going? Do they at some point move off the desktop?

I see a clear short-term trend where RSS readers are going to be melded into browsers and email-clients. I see them as becoming more capable of rendering html (and soon video, and audio), where their value as an "alerting" tool become less apparent. I also would consider this a very dangerous time to be an RSS reader client company - even for the forerunners, I don't see competitive advantage, or amongst themselves, competitive differentiation. Longer term, I believe RSS will become an important background technololgy -- and enabler -- much the same way html is today to the web. RSS will not be a house-hold name among the early majority and on. There will be readers and alerting tools on various platforms and form-factors (and likely powered by xml/rss/whatever), but people won't be calling it rss.

What are the most exciting uses you've seen of Klips? How do you use them yourself?

On the consumer front, I find the email watchers (the hotmail, yahoo, gmail and pop3 mail) Klips to be very exciting - they are secure, access complex data and present users with dynamically generated setup options. One the enterprise front, two very interesting ones are a company that is using a Klip to alert their call-center agents of key data from their CRM system, and a bank who uses Klips as part of their work-flow system to increase productivity and review speed. Where the Bank's internal processes saw documents, policies, forms, and client applications being worked on by many employees and managers, the current work-flow system put the onus of moving forward on the employees and manager's shoulders and relied on email to notify them when a document was edited, or in need of approval. We improved on this process by working with their work-flow application where each individual user is now alerted to pending documents, policies and applications via KlipFolio - it's relevant to what the manager or employee is responsible for, and a popup alert ensures they take action, and of-course with a single click from the Klip, they can jump right into the familiar work-flow system.

So far there are only a few 3.0 feeds. what else is in the pipeline, feed-wise?

We will be updating all of the email Klips, the stock tracker, eBay monitor Klips and as with Betanews, we are working with a handful of key content providers globally to update their Klips. In general we will be focusing our efforts on more service oriented Klips, and encouraging our community of developers to do the same - part of our efforts to differentiate.

How do you make your money from this? And how would you characterise the journey so far? I first wrote about Klips more than 3 years ago, and a lot has happened on the internet since then. Are Klips struggling to keep up with these changes?

The hype of RSS has both helped and distracted our progress. On the one hand, RSS has educated the markets, and generated interest in desktop alerting. On the other, RSS has made our position more difficult to define - educating the market that we are not an RSS reader, but rather an alerting dashboard targeted for commercial purposes. The markets are more conductive - more educated, more financially willing, and more competitively driven. Also, I truly believe that in our space - alerting dashboards - we are positioned as one of the best players.

I'm not sure it's a matter of keeping up with RSS - we support RSS among other standards. One thing we have found is that real-customer deals are hard to find the closer you get to RSS - it's a very early adopter marketplace - lots of hype, not much real value or money yet. As we distance ourselves from RSS we find the client conversation is more focused on solving real business needs.

As mentioned in an earlier answer, we target content providers, online retailers and premium content providers as our KlipFolio Branded customers; application vendors, service providers, ISPs as our OEM customers; and corporations as our KlipFolio enterprise customers. We have a solid base of customers in all three areas and (with out venture funding I might add) are profitable.

You are right - lots has happened, but I think the interesting stuff is yet to happen. Same goes for Serence ...

Around 10days ago, I had a break up in a 11year old relationship and man it hurts..and i feel terrible that its was me who lead to precipitation of the situation. I dreamt that I will be forgiven on the occassion of Easter but that also did not happen.

I still believe that situation will change for better and may be this incident is an April Fool joke by someone for whom my love is more than my need.

Btw, did you guys notice the April Fool Google had on us! They announced a service to give free prints for all the mails as a feature of Gmail and then while all of us were wondering on getting invited in the beta of lovely feature, Google cutely disclosed that it is an April Fool. Man, you fooled me...

The Gadget Hound also taught us a thing or two about the subject in this post, in which a reader's concern prompted him to ask more about Wi-Fi scamming. If you haven't changed the default name and password on your network, you're contributing to your network's susceptibility to malicious attacks, so don't be surprised when intruders—either neighbors or strangers parked outside your home—bog down your network with spam, or illegal downloads. Like Tom said, the best way to keep those intruders out is by enabling WEP or WPA encryption on your network by changing the password on your router. Chris has a step-by-step guide on how to do this too.

SEC Technologies has another option: wireless blocking paint. One coat of this paint "creates an electromagnetic fortress by preventing airborne hackers from intercepting signals." Sounds a little too much like something the government would be interested in, and less like a technology that would benefit the average Wi-Fi user who has already ditched the landline over a cell phone. 'Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed Babloo Saheb' - is the avatar worn by me as - I need to lead important initiatives (hence Saheb word as part of full alias and Babloojee as short name for showing respect this position carries). Babloo being a childlike name indicates challenge my soul faces to work as formal leader. Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed indicates the inspiration I take from गिल्हेरी (Gil heri) that is simply our cute friend squirrel! Well I know you love me and care for me!

But you know what I am missing you and all of you might also be missing me (or my unkept promises :) )

I suddenly realized that its around 750 calendar days since I exicted and jumped in habit of blogging...my few random posts won't reflect at all the kind of experiences I have had as direct outcome of this hobby by reading from several folks, meeting few and relating with a few.

During last few years I seem to be missing on few hygiene aspects related to managing my time for best benefit of myself and others in many personal matters. Thus I am lucky that you all have still been with me and are always gonna be there as we move along...

So what I am gonna do is list some of the things which i promised to each of you with some indication of time i desire to close the and all I would do is strike these off as and when they are closed... so keep pulling me and encouraging me, cheering me as I crawl to these simple steps...

1. Nandika - let me get your bicycle fixed up - target - 8th/9th jul

2. Neetu - let me go to sleep by 2.15am 8th jul IST (i know we need to continue living happily and thus stay away from this 'Dream Express' - nick name of my newly acquired PC, beyond healthy hours)

3. Dr Lolla - will send you updated Synopsis and Approach document for my PhD Thesis by 10th Jul'06 and will also call you after that to share my ideas on your upcoming program on 'Art for Non-Art folks specially those in IT'

4. Rampi - can we meet on 12th jul for dinner? will catch up reg my ideas on quillpad
and Kids Hobby club etc more often and supported by timely actions as mutually agreed :))

5. Umashankar Sir - hope we can meet soon and you can get me started on getting Linux based gaming and entertainment center soon...

Its great to know from Kiruba that next Chennai Bloggers Meet is planned. Click here for details. It was very good experience for me to attend the last meet. Now that there are many people whom I know personally well who are blogging (some of them are David, Jayu, Balu, GS, Somu, Kiruba, Kiran, Rampi, KS, ....) and I also relate to many many blogs without having ever met the authors.

As once Kiruba shared with me that there is so much of goodness around, it makes one feel very comfortable. Offcourse, he and me discussed that there are occassions in blog world related interactions which one may not prefer, but then those could happen any where else as well.

I like many other people believe that blog is a tool and end result for its usage is purely in the hand of the user.

Its good that I have had chance to read and meet good people and now I started even hearing and watching some of them.

I look forward to have enhanced lifestyle and would like to leverage blog as a key vehicle for that in years to come. Look forward to have your presence for the meet.

Theme of my (career) dream

As usual this time of the year, like many other companies, we have our annual performance review and career related discussions. I have had fairly interesting change in my profile this time. I look forward to maximize our performance by aligning my talents in line with the new team.

i have come across someone who relates a lot to what i would like to do and also the manner in which i would like to do that.

The person is - Robert Scoble.

If you don't know who he is, "Well, you need to crawl out of that big rock you have been hibernating in".

Why do i relate to him?

1. professional recognition he has - click here to check what The Economist wrote about him in Feb'05

2. frankness & honesty that he conveys - my love on these aspects is based on the read and hear i have done on him over last week or so

3. affection and sincerity he has for family - this is what i liked most, that he is taking 1 month off in August'06 to spend time with his mother and clean up her place!! Not that any other son won't like to do, being able to do this in today's fast moving world is great. I also read that he has been scheduling time for his son's school on key dates. He works closely with his wife in life and thus leaving life fully each day, probabily one day at a time.

Here is my wishing him all the good luck for his new initiatives and I hope he would visit India soon as indicated in his interview to Kiruba.

I also hope to evolve as "unofficial official credible" spokesperson for organizations and bodies i am associated with............

Hey Folks, don't get astonished, me-the nice behaved guy has decided to get himself "poured" and "soaked" into whatever flows at BarCamp .

On top of it, one of the host, Kiruba, intends to delegate HOSPITALITY Function for the event to me, yes, thats correct.

Now imagine this, already I am participating in Vodkathon! so in what state of mind and body I would be to take care of esteemed participants at BarCamp.......

Jokes apart guys, this is very very interesting forum of us and us only. I mean there will be Sharkhun or Aamir of the cine world, nor will be NarayanMurthys or Azim Premzis of the IT world or for that matter any one already having traditional fan following may not be permitted.

Just get an idea of the "spirit" of the show before you proceed, this will help you make better sense of my chatter in following few paras.

All we aspire in hospitality desk is to treat each of our distinguished participants / volunteers / sponsors/ partners / organizers / other BarCamp Champs, with respect for their mindshare and pertinent participation / contribution in making this event happen as planned.

It is already being reported to be a world class kick off an international forum in Chennai and incidently also at Hyderabad on 8th-9th Apr'06.

2. Volunteers who can accomodate esteemed outstation speakers as family guest for 1-2 nights

3. Folks who can receive and also see off outstation teams / delegates

4. Center Operations Center - would need to work 24 x 7 from 7th Apr'06 till we wind up the show (that includes cleaning the premises and cleaning the Wiki site based on the proceedings)---- here we will need a place with land line(s), net commection and probabily a rest room ie working home cum office

5. Sponsors

5.1 Helpline cells - we can play your desired mp3 tune.....if needed :)
5.2. Banners for Railway Stn and Airport, Bus Stand etc.....(who knows if UFOs could land at venue as well)

Well it has been a battle well fought.....and am happy that winner is me the net savy cool person aspiring to achieve maximum with zilch or minimal effort in an ethical manner.

It has taken me 2 years of (blog) reading - Kiruba, Somu, Jaydeep, GS, Balu, and few months of following Gaurav for a an oldie like me to make some sense of whats happening across us. Let me confess that names mentioned here are just an indication and they atmost represent 2% of all those whom I should acknowledge for helping me understand the world today a bit better.

Last weekend saw some interesting developments in my life and now I have discovered what I was always seeking, more on that later.

I am pleased to inform you that starting tomorrow my raddiwala will have lesser work as I am no longer under information overload syndrome. I am starting with chopping newspapers out of my life. The leading national newspaper, probabily only one with Readers Editor and the leading national business daily may not realize that I will nolonger miss them.

But some where I will be welcomed with red carpet(of nice banner ads) as I am slowly moving into more engagements with them. Yeah you are right, I am watching Budget 06. So chill and relax, don't worry when everyone is rushing to buy some things which are produced by cutting trees (thats how (news)paper is produced i was told), some others might be glued to TV channels and enduring misery of having no control on sequence of events, here is the choice you make today and once for all, that given 2 ways of attaining same experience whichever way you choose defines what you get and also the option chosen decides what kind of earth you leave behind - a clean, green one or some what worser than today - choice is yours !!

I am a simple person who intends to maximize benefits with minimal efforts and almost no restrictions. This Way suites MyWay....

So as markets react to Mr P Chidambaram's announcements, go ahead and relax amongst chaos...I am damn impressed with all the agencies - Sify, NIC and any others involved would have worked together to make this happen. It is incidental that I work in Sify. I am once again feeling proud of my company and this time also sharing the feeling with you.

One thing which impressed me was Finance Ministry website - they don't have a single snap of their boss...gr8 guys ....ways to go....

I am shocked frustated and anguished at the attack at IISc Bangalore

I strongly condemn who ever did it for what ever motive and would like to share that its always easy for one to attack than for any agency to protect or foil such attacks.

However, is this a terrorist attack or a personal rivalary or simply a lunatic on run with a gun??

These questions may not be answered easily and the answers may not be consistent for us to get the real picture ever.

However, I personally believe that there is more to life than what we can ever see and understand. Human beings have their limitations and i am one of those with strong belief in destiny and law of karma which postulates that any experience for any being is pre-determined and concurrently changing based on thoughts & actions of the being. Our physical existence is merely a part of a very big overall cosmic play.

Thus there are events which we don't like to happen and infact feel dejected and sad to see, however the motto of fulfilling this physical world is - show must go on.....

While many of us would condole the death and would like to contribute in some positive way to build on this issue's aftermath, this is neither the first nor the last time that we are faced with this challenge.

As an Indian, I pledge to work for Global Peace more than ever I have done so far.

I committ that I would use my physical life to the best of my abilities to protect mecca's of our society from such incidents.....

I am not wanting to be a matyr or even a Satyendra Dube or any other whistle blower...i will remain a family centric person with my self interest above all other social committments yet I will work beyond the usual to do my two cent....Lets get going to work....

Friends Today is World's Aids Day - well we are already having several other interesting days to do something good, for me some how, this day is standing out as over last year & half, I have had chance to meet / interact with a few professionals engaged in tackling this challenge...those interactions did sensitize me to the subject a wee bit better and I would like to contribute my bit on this subject as & when I can. There is huge information available on internet and otherwise, but how do we use this effectively and not become a victim of information overload.

Over next few weeks I would like to share views and exchange notes with like minded people on managing the information in an easy and usable yet innovative manner.

Another interesting issue related with information management is authenticity and genuineness of information or even the source. I know, we all are having enough common sense to say that we won't get fooled by a fishy source as we do know what makes things genuine. But then have a look at following excercise ! (pardon me for being sounding professorial here):

Go to www.google.com and then type “weapons of mass destruction” for “Search” and then click “I am feeling lucky” and then watch the result.

What appears as a browser error message, actually happens to be an interesting creative work by sellers of T-shirts, Mugs etc to get prospects interested in their merchandise...

This example does illustrate how easy it is to get "phised" (term used to describe a situation where an "innocent" internet user ends up giving personal details on a site appearing as a geunine bank or government site seeking those details). Such techniques are used by "hackers" to gain access to crucial personal details and then use them subsequently for commercial gains.

Thus to begin our journey into world of information management, lets list the key issues to be tackled -

1. How do we locate which sources of information do we use?
2. How do we verify the correctness of information available on a source and also that of source being authentic,safe?
3. How do we search effectively amongst huge information available at diverse sources and keep updated on developments of matter of interest?
4. How do we maintain a repository of information coming during searches and what mechanism do we employ to store and qualify our findings?
5. How do we share information with peers in secure and yet prompt manner?

By far we have not even considered the management of information from non-digital sources (lets assume that soon every thing would be digitised)....

Together, lets make information management, simpler and relaxing!
